Originally thought to be a social cue, a series of experiments actually suggests a different reason for this bodily function.
There are several theories about the cause of yawning. However, one of them has begun to gain more advocates. This theory is that we yawn to air-condition our brains.

In a paper published in the Journal of Medical Hypotheses, scientists Gary Hack of the University of Maryland and Andrew Gallup of Princeton University wrote that, during yawning, the sinuses act like bellows to cool off the brain. If you suffer from sinus congestion, you might yawn more.
The stretching of the jaw to yawn increases blood flow in the neck, face, and head. In conjunction with that, the deep intake of breath forces a downward flow of spinal fluid and blood from the brain. The air breathed into the mouth cools these fluids.
“Brains, like computers, operate best when they are cool,” the authors said.
The findings may explain why people yawn when they are tired. When you are deprived of sleep, the temperature of the brain rises.
When I heard it at first I thought it was funny but after reading through, i completely agree with you
