Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhen­uakitanatahu is a Maori word for a hill in the country’s North Island. It is pronounced “Taumata whakatangi hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku pokai whenua kitanatahu”. 

The Maori place name translates into English as “the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as ‘landeater’, played his flute to his loved one”. 

It is a hill near the town of Porangahau, south of Waipukurau in southern Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand and it is popularly called Taumata Hill.

With 85 letters long, it is the longest place name in New Zealand, and the longest single word place name in the world.
